ExcelToCSV at a glance

ExcelToCSV is a free online Excel to CSV converter that runs entirely in your web browser. It turns XLSX, XLS, XLSM and ODS spreadsheets into clean CSV files without uploading anything to a server.

  • Formats: .xlsx, .xls, .xlsm, .ods and .csv in; standard .csv out.
  • Multi-sheet parsing: every worksheet is detected and selectable.
  • Batch Excel conversion: export all sheets as separate CSVs in one ZIP.
  • Custom delimiters: comma, semicolon, tab or pipe.
  • Encoding: UTF-8, UTF-8 with BOM for Excel, or ASCII.
  • Private & secure: 100% client-side, so no sign-up and no uploads.

Sheet tab selector

When a workbook has more than one worksheet, ExcelToCSV shows every sheet as a tab above the settings (a dropdown on phones). Click a tab to switch: the preview, row/column stats and CSV output update right away. The active sheet is the one that gets copied or downloaded, and Download All Sheets as ZIP exports every tab at once.

Live preview table

The preview shows the converted rows and columns exactly as they will appear in the CSV, with spreadsheet-style column letters and row numbers. Switch to Raw CSV to see the text output with your delimiter and quoting applied. Large sheets show the first rows for speed, but copy and download always include every row.

How to convert Excel to CSV online

  1. 1. Add your workbook

Drag and drop an .xlsx, .xls, .xlsm, .ods or .csv file into the dropzone, or click to browse. SheetJS parses it in memory in a fraction of a second.

  2. 2. Pick a worksheet

Every sheet in the workbook appears as a tab (or in a dropdown on mobile). Switch between them to preview each one.

  3. 3. Set CSV options

Choose a comma, semicolon, tab or pipe delimiter, UTF-8 / UTF-8 BOM / ASCII encoding, and how fields should be quoted. The preview updates live.

  4. 4. Copy or download

Copy the CSV to your clipboard, download the current sheet as a .csv file, or export every worksheet at once as a ZIP.

100% private

Files are never uploaded. Parsing and conversion happen locally in your browser, so confidential spreadsheets stay on your device.

Multi-sheet aware

Convert one worksheet or all of them. The ZIP export creates a separate, correctly named CSV for every sheet in the workbook.

Excel-friendly output

UTF-8 with BOM keeps accents and non-Latin text intact when you re-open the CSV in Microsoft Excel. Semicolon output suits European locales.

What is the difference between XLSX and CSV?

An XLSX file is a zipped Office Open XML workbook that can hold multiple worksheets, formulas, styles, charts and images. A CSV (comma-separated values) file is plain text: one line per row, with values separated by a delimiter. CSV is the universal import format for databases, CRMs, analytics tools, Python/pandas, R and Google Sheets — which is why converting XLSX to CSV is one of the most common data-prep steps. Because CSV holds one table of values, each worksheet becomes its own CSV file, and formulas are exported as their calculated results.

CSV options explained

Auto-quote string fields
Text values are wrapped in double quotes; numbers and empty cells are left bare. A safe default for most importers.
Quote all fields
Every value, including numbers, is quoted. Useful for strict parsers or to preserve leading zeros as text.
Minimal quoting
Quotes only fields containing the delimiter, a quote or a line break (RFC 4180 style). Smallest output.
UTF-8 with BOM
Adds an invisible byte order mark so Excel on Windows detects UTF-8 and shows special characters correctly.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an Excel file to CSV online?

Drag and drop your .xlsx, .xls, .xlsm or .ods file onto ExcelToCSV (or click to browse). Pick the worksheet, choose a delimiter, encoding and quote style, check the live preview, then click Download CSV File or Copy CSV to Clipboard. Everything runs instantly in your browser.

Can I convert Excel files with multiple sheets?

Yes. ExcelToCSV reads every worksheet in the workbook and shows them as tabs. You can preview and download any single sheet as CSV, or use Download All Sheets as ZIP to get one CSV file per worksheet in a single ZIP archive.

How do I convert all Excel sheets to CSV at once (batch conversion)?

Load your workbook, set the delimiter, encoding and quote style, then click Download All Sheets as ZIP. ExcelToCSV converts every worksheet with the same settings and packs one CSV per sheet, each named after its sheet, into a single ZIP file.

Is my Excel spreadsheet kept private and secure?

Yes. Your spreadsheet is parsed entirely in your browser's memory using JavaScript. The file is never uploaded to any server, so your data stays on your device. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it will still work.

Why do accents or special characters look wrong when I open the CSV in Excel?

Microsoft Excel sometimes assumes a legacy encoding when opening CSV files. Choose the UTF-8 with BOM encoding option before downloading — the byte order mark tells Excel the file is UTF-8 so characters like é, ü, ñ and emoji display correctly.

Should I use a comma or semicolon delimiter?

Use a comma for most tools and English-locale software. Use a semicolon if you open CSV files in Excel in regions that use a comma as the decimal separator (much of Europe). Tab produces TSV-style output and pipe is useful for data that contains many commas.

Is ExcelToCSV free? Are there file limits?

ExcelToCSV is 100% free with no sign-up and no watermarks. There is no fixed file size limit — the practical limit depends on your device's memory. Workbooks with hundreds of thousands of rows convert fine on most modern computers.

Does the converter keep formulas and formatting?

CSV is a plain-text format, so it stores values only. ExcelToCSV exports the calculated value of each formula, as displayed in Excel (including number and date formatting). Colors, fonts, merged cells, charts and images are not part of CSV.
